New York Maker Faire and Shapeways

It's been awhile since my last post but it was a much needed break over the summer. With Lexi back in school (beginning 7th grade!) it feels like time is flying by. Summer gives us precious time to spend with family and friends while recharging my creative juices!

Now that fall here I can feel the excitement of change as new ideas are coming to fruition! We have been working on some projects that are new and cutting edge.

This past weekend my family and I went to the ‘Maker Faire’ in New York City! It happened that this trip coincided with Lexi's birthday so we thought it would be perfect to surprise her the morning of. And of course I wanted to record her reaction without thinking that a 5am wake up and surprise would not exactly have the energy I thought it would. But she had a huge smile and in disbelief, rolled herself out of bed. A weekend in the Big Apple - here we come!

The Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science was amazing! So much creativity in design and engineering. We were blown away by some of the technology, especially the vast array of 3D printers. My husband had never seen a 3D printer before and was pretty impressed by how quickly the technology has advanced.

Shapeways was featuring our jewellery from Duet Designs at their booth. I didn't want Lexi to miss this! She has helped create these designs with me and her influence and creativity are a breath of fresh air!

We stopped by the Shapeways booth and the smile on Lexi's face was priceless when she saw our jewellery on display! A first time for her to really see the collection as a whole. We met Amy and Kat from Shapeways and had a chance to discuss our ideas with them which was great! Jewellery is taking off on Shapeways and we are so excited to be a part of it!

On Monday we ventured out to the Shapeways Factory in Long Island. It is a really cool space that is ever expanding. Virginia gave us a tour which allowed us to see the process involved in setting up the printers, finishing the product to shipping. It is pretty amazing!

Visiting Shapeways has given me new appreciation for methods and applications that are coming to the forefront with 3D design. Thank you Shapeways for displaying our designs and showing us your factory.

There is so much creativity that can be brought to life through 3D design and printing. I think that this can especially be applied to jewellery. So many of our customers have ideas that they want to see in jewellery that they wear. Almost every piece I make is customized in one way or another.

Wouldn't it be great to bring tools to the customer that would allow them to make these changes themselves?

One of our new concepts is to allow our clients to customize our jewellery designs to their liking. They become a part of the creation process by changing elements of the ring design with sliders. The options can include ring size, width, shank profile, elements and metals. They get to see their changes in real time through an amazing new application that can be integrated into our website! Check out the link on our website below to give it a try!

Autumn feels like the beginning of the year for me. After a wonderful summer I am excited to move forward with new ideas!
